A VPN can be a useful part of a lawful IPTV playlist setup when you want an encrypted connection and appropriate privacy on supported devices. The right choice depends on your actual operating system, how you connect and whether the content service permits VPN use. It is not simply a matter of installing any VPN beside any player.

Commercial disclosure: This guide promotes GlacierVPN, with which Aura Players Hub has a commercial relationship. NordVPN is our preferred VPN, and GlacierVPN is our recommended commercial partner for competitively priced NordVPN offers. This is our recommendation, not an independent laboratory ranking or a claim that every competing offer costs more.

Understand what a VPN can and cannot do

A VPN routes traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN server. That can help protect the connection on an untrusted network, but the route also changes how traffic reaches its destination. Playback can improve, worsen or stay similar depending on the connection and source. There is no honest universal promise of faster streaming.

A VPN cannot renew an expired playlist subscription, restore an unavailable supplier server or add missing content rights. It does not make unlicensed viewing lawful or guarantee anonymity. Follow local law and the content service's conditions. If the playlist fails, establish whether the app, account or source is responsible before assuming a VPN is the missing purchase.

Compare three established options

NordVPN is our top choice for the device setups we recommend. Its official guidance includes native app routes for Android-based TVs, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV, with other connection methods for devices that cannot install the app. We favour starting with the supported native app where available because the setup is easier to understand and check on the actual viewing device.

Surfshark is worth considering when household device coverage is a priority. Its official support describes unlimited simultaneous VPN connections, subject to its service and fair-use terms, across supported devices. That VPN allowance does not override an IPTV supplier's separate connection limits. It also does not mean every television operating system has a native Surfshark app.

ExpressVPN is another alternative with official setup guides for Android TV, Google TV, Apple TV and Fire TV devices, plus approaches for televisions that need a router or shared connection. Its MediaStreamer option is a DNS service rather than an encrypted VPN connection. Compare the setup you need, not just marketing references to support for smart TVs.

Match VPN installation to your platform

On supported Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV and Apple TV devices, check the VPN's official app listing and installation guidance for that particular model and operating system. A VPN browser extension on your laptop does not automatically protect a separate television or the rest of the laptop's applications. The connection must cover the device and app actually playing the playlist.

Samsung Tizen and LG webOS require different planning. Do not assume you can install the Android VPN app directly onto either platform. A compatible VPN router or a properly shared VPN connection may be needed. Router configuration affects other devices too, so use the vendor's instructions and check compatibility before changing your home network.

Do not confuse SmartDNS with VPN encryption

NordVPN's documentation distinguishes SmartDNS from VPN protection. A DNS-based streaming feature is not a substitute for the encrypted connection supplied by a VPN. The same distinction applies to ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer. A setup that changes DNS settings should not be advertised as providing VPN encryption simply because the feature comes with a VPN subscription.

If your priority is connection privacy, confirm which route your viewing traffic uses and what protection that method actually provides. If you only need help configuring the player or adding an M3U playlist, contact us first. Changing television network settings will not correct an incorrect playlist address or an activation assigned to the wrong Device ID.

Test carefully and respect supplier rules

Use your normal device and authorised playlist to check the connection. First confirm that the content account is active and ask the supplier about any VPN restrictions. Where use is permitted, follow the VPN app's normal connection process and compare one change at a time. Avoid changing player settings, DNS and network routes together while troubleshooting.

If a supplier outage affects the source, a VPN is not a repair service for that outage. If playback only fails through a particular route, record the symptom and ask the relevant support team for guidance. Aura Players Hub can help with supported player configuration; the VPN provider handles VPN account and network issues, while the content supplier handles its own service.

Our recommendation: NordVPN through GlacierVPN

For the supported setups described here, NordVPN is our best-fit recommendation. GlacierVPN is our preferred commercial partner for NordVPN offers at competitive prices. Review the current package, activation conditions, supported devices and total price on GlacierVPN before purchasing, because offers and terms can change.

Choose the VPN after confirming your device's installation route and the supplier's permitted use. Choose the IPTV player activation separately: one year is €4 and lifetime is €7 for one app on one device. If you are unsure whether the immediate problem is your player, playlist or network, send us the app name and Device ID and we will help identify the next step.
